Dhanurāsana in Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā: Spinal Flexibility, Energy Activation and Health Benefits
In the classical yogic scripture Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swami
Swatmarama, Dhanurāsana (Bow Pose) symbolises dynamic energy and focused
intention. The body in this posture resembles a drawn bow, representing
readiness, vitality, and directed prāṇa.
Unlike passive meditative āsanas, Dhanurāsana is active and
expansive, stimulating the spine and energising the entire system.

Integrative Reflection
Dhanurāsana is a posture of intention. Just as a bow stores
potential energy before release, this āsana gathers vitality within the spine
and abdomen. It energises, strengthens, and prepares the practitioner for
disciplined action.
In therapeutic contexts, it enhances spinal health; in
classical symbolism, it represents directed prāṇa and purposeful living.
Closing Thought
A bow without tension cannot release an arrow; likewise,
disciplined effort in Dhanurāsana awakens focused vitality.
